Biography
Born into a family of musicians, Lisa Strauss began learning the piano at the age of five. She then moved on to the cello, which became her main instrument. After studying at the CRR de Paris in Hélène Dautry’s class, she entered the CNSM of Paris at the age of sixteen in Michel Strauss’s class. She obtained her master’s degree there five years later with the highest honors.
Lisa frequently performs as a soloist, notably with the Baden-Baden philharmonic Orchestra, the Oise philharmonic Orchestra, the Douai Orchestra, and the Appassionato Ensemble. She has been invited by numerous festivals, including the Auvers-sur-Oise Festival, the Ravel Days, Ottawa Chamberfest, Opus Amadeus, Musique de Chambre à Giverny…
Lisa hones her skills with personalities such as Yo-Yo Ma, Ivry Gitlis, and Lynn Harrell. A defender of contemporary music, she collaborates with many contemporary composers, including Régis Campo, Matthieu Stefanelli, and Thomas Gubitsch.
In 2017, Lisa joined the Mozart promotion of the Philippe Jaroussky Music Academy. She has been a laureate of the Fondation Banque Populaire since June 2020. Also a laureate of the Villa Musica Foundation, she explores the great repertoire of chamber music alongside eminent artists. In October 2020, she joined the cello excellence class of Gautier Capuçon at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. In August 2021, she was selected to participate in the “Un Été en France” tour alongside the French cellist, then joined his foundation in September 2022. There, she met the Canadian pianist Anastasia Rizikov. Together, they created the SHUM duo.
During her studies, Lisa co-founded the Philia Trio, an ensemble composed of a violin, an accordion, and a cello. Their first album, Madness (April 2022), was recorded with the support of the Auvers-sur-Oise Festival and their record label DiscAuvers.
The Shum duo’s debut CD, recorded with the support of the Gautier Capuçon Foundation, will be released in May 2024 under the Warner Classics label.
